THE BEST WINDSURFING LOCATIONS IN CROATIA
Premantura (Pula)
In Premantura, the farthest part of Istrian peninsula, during
summertime pleasant southeastern wind blows and it is very suitable
for windsurfing beginners. During autumn and spring strong northern
(bura) and southern (jugo) winds are blowing.
Bura in Premantura is not dangerous because of suitable wind
direction, it is blowing directly towards coast. On the other side
jugo (southern wind), due to shallow coast, causes waves two or three
meters high. Premantura is well known by these waves on which you can
surf with short surfing boards.
Ravni i Rabac
Near Ravno, place south of Labin, part of canal between coast and
island of Cres is the narrowest. Pleasant warm winds that blow from
the southwest, reaching up to 15 knots, create excellent conditions
for windsurfing.
Another convenient place for windsurfing is located near Rabac. When
strong and steady wind, created from the bura (northern wind), blows
from mountain Velebit large waves are becoming suitable for surfers -
free riders.
Preluk ( Volosko near Opatija )
In bay Preluk near Volosko suitable wind for surfers and windsurfers
blows early in the morning or during the night due to big difference
between temperature of coast and sea.
Surfing conditions are the best at the beginning of autumn because
wind is changing into "tramuntana" during night. Often surfers are
coming during night and starting to surf in the dark, waiting for the
dawn on the waves.
Punat and Baška ( otok Krk )
Island Krk is definitely the best location for windsurfing, and
depending on surfing skills you can choose between two locations -
Baška and Punat. When strong bura blows towards Baška from direction
of Senj, wind speed often reaches up to 27 to 30 knots, and waves are
rising up to 1.5 meters. This creates excellent conditions for
profesional windsurfers with short boards. Punat is much more
peacefull bay, more convenient for beginners and intermediate
experienced surfers, as bura blows here in medium strenght.
Jadrija (near Šibenik )
On Jadrija, beach near Šibenik, you can experience a wide range of
different winds. During spring and autumn you can find here very
strong bura and moderate jugo, and during summer "tramuntana" and
"maestral" create excellent conditions for windsurfing.
Due to several islands in front of Jadrija, there is no risk for
windsurfers, all surfers can practice here regardless of the level of
knowledge and skills.
Bol ( island Brač)
Bol is internationally known windsurfing and kitesurfing location, and
generally the prettiest place for windsurfing on the Adriatic.
In canal between islands Hvar and Brač blows "maestral" which is stronger on this side of the coast
than anywhere else, and it happens every afternoon, almost without
exceptions.
Light wind "levanat" often blows during the morning and is ideal for
learning and practice, so here you can find a lot of schools for
windsurfing.
Viganj (Pelješac peninsula)
Viganj, situated at the top of the Peljesac peninsula, next to Bol on
Brac, in the summer, is the best windsurfing destination. Every day,
from afternoon till dusk, blows mediocre "maestral" or sometimes
"jugo". Windsurfing conditions are milder than those on the island of
Brac, and because the waves are not too high, Viganj is suitable for
beginners and intermediate surfers.
Ruskamen - near Omiš
Ruskamen is situated 7 kilometers southeast of Omiš in between Split
and Makarska. Ruskamen is well known place for excursions and
vacations where you can enjoy beautiful sandy beaches and the shade of
pine trees. Ruskamen is favorable destination for all who enjoy
windsurfing, one of the most popular places for windsurfing in the
whole coastal area.
Podstrana - near Split
Crystal-clear sea and beautiful landscapes make Podstrana one of the
best windsurfing locations on the entire Adriatic coast. For real
surfing enthusiasts windsurfing is the best from September till
November. With warm and strong south winds will not be disappointed.
Windsufing is enjoyed almost throughout whole year, and in summer
"maestral" blows almost everyday.
Apart from these locations, there are many good places for windsurfing
along the Croatian coast and on all inhabited islands. All above
listed places are also excellent locations for kitesurfing.
