SEA KAYAKING IN CROATIA
Adriatic Sea offers the opportunity for relaxation through various water sports. Sea kayaking is the one of such sports. It is not a competitive sport.
Numerous Adriatic islands often lies close one to another, and thus provide excellent opportunities to enjoy kayaking.
You can bring your own kayak or you can rent it for an hour or two, for half a day, for a day or more.
You can engage yourself in several day kayak adventures independently or organized by agencies.
Dubrovnik with its islands is ideal destination for sea kayaking.
With kayak you can go around and see old town of Dubrovnik. Nearby islands – Lokrum, Daksa, Lopud, Koločep, Jakljan,
and Šipan are oblong and lies paralel with the coast, insomuch provide shelter from the open sea.
In Dubrovnik there is a good offer of different sea kayaking tours.
On the island of
Korčula you can enjoy half-day kayak excursions.
On the island of
Mljet you can hire a kayak and enjoy rowing on the Big and Small lakes.
Seven-day vacation with kayak you can choose on the island of
Vis, farthest inhabited Adriatic island.
Tour includes kayaking around Vis and island of Biševo, which is famous by Blue cave.
On the island of Hvar sea kayaking offer is also good. Seven-day tours are also available.
Even though the island of Hvar is exposed to the open sea, Pakleni (Hell) islands,
which are situated very close, provide good shelter and the opportunity to closely meet their beauty.
Sutivan on the island of Brač is a place where you can enjoy in eight-day vacation,
which is composed of kayaking tour around island of Brač and partially around island Šolta,
visits to attractions on the island of Brač and swimming at various beaches.
If you are visiting
Brela you can see over Vrulja – big source of fresh water in the sea –
and a chain of small beaches, suitable for naturism.
You can take a same trip from
Pisak.
Another interesting offer is the offer of different sports activities, behind sea kayaking, in
Novigrad, small fisherman village near Zadar. Next to kayaking there are canoeing, climbing in National park Paklenica and National park Krka, rafting on river Cetina included in eight-day vacation.
On
Kornati islands, group of more than 100 islands, which are fogether National park, you can spend sea kayaking vacation starting from Zadar. The same company offers sea kayaking tours on the islands of
Rab, Cres and Lošinj. You can choose between half-day, one-day, two-day, three-day or several-day tour.
If you are experienced in sea kayaking, you can choose staring place for adventure on your own.
From the islands of Brijuni in the north till the islands of Elafiti and Mljet in the south, insular areas of the Adriatic sea are ideal for sea kayaking adventures: from bay to bay, from gulf to gulf, few miles of rowing and lot of landing.
Distances between islands are not big, and with kayak you can sail into deltas of rivers Mirna, Zrmanja, Krka, Cetina and Neretva.
Adriatic sea is relatively safe and pleasant for sea kayaking. Most of the islands have elongated shape, parallel with the coast, so one of the island sides is always protected from troublesome winds and waves.
During sea kayaking tours you must count with midday mistral, northeastern wind – bura, and southeastern wind – jugo. The most dangerous wind is bura, because it starts suddenly and in very short period of time it can grow strong force, especially in Velebitski canal, near Vrulja – between Omiš and Makarska.
Because of the many very sharp rocks, polyethylene kayaks are more safe, rather than laminated or collapsible ones.
Polyethylene single-seater and two-seater kayaks of known European manufacturers can be rented.
It would be a pity not to bring a mask, fins and snorkel, because it allows you to enjoy it clear and rich underwater world.
Lodging is not difficult to find in the camp, or in some house on the island, in the boarding house, in apartment or in a hotel, as well as a shop for supply.
