FISHING ON ADRIATIC
A Chinese proverb says: If you want to be happy your whole life, learn how to catch fish.
Another proverb: Give a man a fish and you fed him on that day. Teach him to hunt fish and you
fed him for a lifetime.
Fishing is a very old human activity. For example, the river Euphrates and Tigris represent
the main source of food Mesopotamia more than 5000 years, Indian cities of Mohenjo Daro
and Harappa conceal the remains of copper hook, arrows and multiprongs old almost 5000 years,
old egiptian view that clearly outlines the fishing rod, line and a net from around 2000 BC,
and similar traces in China date from 400 BC.
Roman mosaics and paintings vividly show fish and other sea animals caught and
eaten during the Roman Empire, and Aristotle and Pliny describe the production
of purple color in the species of marine snails ( Purple dye murex) by what Fenicians ary known.
Today, at the time of cars, big cities, modern technology , fishing is one of the ways to return to nature.
Croatia is a country rich in fishing opportunities, although less and less, due to uncontrolled fishing.
For fisherman there are various types of small and large fish that can be cought along the Adriatic coast.
Local population in Croatia has a long fishing tradition, so there is always someone who can
give visitors the information and tips on fishing.
Each island far from the coast is good for fishing. Less people on the island, more fish in the sea.
The tradition of fishing on the Adriatic islands and coast runs from ancient
times when the fishing was an important source of food. Especially on the island of Vis,
Lastovo, Korcula, Hvar, Brač, Žirje, Kornati islands, and many others.
On the page about island of Rab you can read about the history of fishing on that island.
Before you go fishing it is necessary to obtain a fishing permit. To get it, it
is necessary to present proof of identity (passport, driving license etc.) Licenses are issued in
travel agencies and offices in all towns along the coast.
Permits are issued for recreational fishing, spear-gun fishing, tuna fishing etc.
Permits can be daily, weekly, monthly and annually. Recreational fishing license allows
fishing with no more than three fishing equipment with no more than five hooks.
Maximum weight of the catch is 5 kilograms per day and the catch may not be sold.
The whole Adriatic Sea is open for fishing and special limitations exist for waters of national parks
(Kornati , Brijuni, Krka, Mljet), and for some smaller sites.
EQUIPMENT FOR FISHING
On the Adriatic fishermen have been crossing to modern ways of fishing only in recent years.
The long habit of fishing 'out of hand' is difficult to leave.
Although this method of fishing has its charms, because you feel each touch
of the fish in the hand.
Fishing rod still has numerous advantages.
You can go fishing even by stronger winds, ros is much faster handled,
can fish at the same time with multiple rods, often rod catches the fish with its elasticity,
Cord (nylon) tanglement – what in fishing 'out of hand' occurs to even most experienced fishermen,
with a rod happens much less often.
If you are a beginner in fishing, equipment is not especially important.
During the acquisition of experience in fishing it will happen to damage the rod or role.
Only when you gain enough experience in fishing, you can think about the procurement of better quality equipment.
Fishing rods
There are several types of materials of which fishing rods are made -
different types of wood, fiberglass, carbon fiber. It is important to know type
of fishing for which the rod is going to be used before entering the store or possibly
online ordering.
Rods differ in the number of parts of which were made (one, split, telescopic),
by maximum weight of lead and bait for a good pull, and its length ( 1.5-6m).
The second division is by purpose - for keg fishing, fishing on the bottom, fishing jerk,
fixed rods, bolognese rods for sea fishing.
Rods are divided according to elasticity - soft action rods,
solid action and action throughout the length. The proper length depends on type of
fish and type of bait that will be used for fishing.
Rod of 1.5 m and weight pull 10 gr. is sufficient for light bait and small fish.
Fishing on the larger fish where the hook sets larger bait fish and throw the longer distances,
the rod must be longer and have greater gram capacity.
Rod easily breaks if the load bait and lead are heavyer than declared, and
you trie to throw out bait to greater distance.
Reels
Reels on the rod has a multiple function. First, avoid tanglement on the throw,
especially when you are fishing in the wind. Since it is now much more cautious fish,
reel allows line to be thinner.
When you draw big fish, reel allows you to adjust the brakes to avoid braking lines or rod.
When picking the reel, roll capacity is vital. Higher roll capacity allows further bait toss.
For beginners in the fishing, it is not especially important to buy expensive reels.
When you exceed the basics of fishing you use more expensive rods.
Line
Line is critical equipment for fishing. The reasons are multiple:
bbr
- string has to be more thinner and less seeable so it doesnt scare off the fish
- must be durable to the mechanical stimulation such as twisting, stretching, wearing by
coating over the stone, age, etc.
- must be resistant to the influence of sun and sea water
Cords can be monofilament or braided. Braided with smaller diameter are more sturdy than monofilament.
Cords can be colorless or in different colors.
It is good to pay attention when you buy the cord at capacity, although it is not the
only feature that determines the quality of the cord. Line on a reel needs to be
periodically replaced, especially if it comes to sticking or longer exposure to sea.
TYPES OF SPORTS FISHING
There are many types of fishing at sea and can be devided in various ways.
Fishing from the shore and fishing from boats. Fishing during the day and fishing at night.
Fishing from shore has a number of subgroups. Fishing for small fish. Fishing for bigger fish.
Fishing for surface fish. Fishing on the bottom. Fishing on the clean sandy terrain. Fishing on the rocky bottom.
Fishing in shallow and deep bottom. Fishing in the foam of waves. And so on.
Fishing from shore can be very diverse. May choose to hunt small fish, and hunt the best
kinds of saltwater fish such as gilthead seabream, two-banded seabream, white seabream,
sharpsnout seabream, striped seabream, dentex.
While gilthead seabream and striped seabream are more often found on the clean bottom,
other types are usually found at the bottom which is mostly stony.
The exception is the night when all of these types can be cought on the sandy
fields and they even come to very shallow water.
Fishing from boat also has a many variants similar to fishing from the shore.
A type of fishing is 'keg' fishing(fishing with tended line) for dentex, greater amberjack, tuna fish,
striped bonito, sea bass, etc. Tended line can be used to catch smaller fish such as mackerel,
saddle bream, garfish and other.
Special type of fishing for squid and cuttlefish. It is done mainly from the boat,
but can be done from the coast, but with less success.
Accessories with one or more tricks in the form of fish are discarded almost to the bottom,
then lifted up and down in spurts.
BAITS FOR SEA FISHING
For fishing at sea are used many types of baits. They can be divided into live or
dead fish, sea worms, mussels, crabs, sea snails, bread or pastry and lures.
Live fish are used to fish for dentex, greater amberjack, sea bass, etc. These are usually
garfish, flathead mullet, and squid. Dead fish can be used for fishing on the same type,
but with a significantly weaker performance. Sardines and sand smelt may be used to fish
for very different types of fish, but can not be discard far unless the bait is tied on
the hook by an invisible thread.
Sea worms have a lot of spicies. The best known are the large sea worm and 'Bibi'.
Large sea worm is almost universal bait, but because of the price it is not wise to
use in fishing for small fish. 'Bibi' is due to exceptional hardness ideal bait in
fishing for gilthead seabream and dentex.
Shells are excellent bait. Their weakness is that the majority of shells are
very easy to dislodge from the hook. One of the most commonly used is the mussel shells -
especially in the fishing at a depth (pandora, two-banded seabream) or in fishing for the
fish that are retained near the surface or often come to the surface to surfaces (beech, saddled seabream, etc.).
From sea snails that are good bait emphasizes purple dye murex which is especially
good for hunting gilthead seabreams. Small sea snails, located on the border of the tides,
are great as bait for catching small fish. The bread is often used as bait when fishing for
mullet. Dough made from flour and parmesan is a very good bait, but are easily removed from the hook.
Fishing with artificial bait can be conducted from the shore (the sea bass, garfish, mackerel,
saddle bream) or from a boat that is anchored or sailing. From anchored boat lure is thrown
as far as possible and drawn on the desired depth depending on which fish you want to catch.
From the boat in motion you can fish mainly large predators such as dentex, greater amberjack,
palamidas etc., as well as smaller fish such as mackerel etc.
GROUNDBAIT
Today there is less and less fish. To have success in fishing, it is very important to attract
and retain the fish in place of fishing. ybr>
For some types of fish is good to do that a couple of days before fishing, such as gilthead seabream.
It is best to prepare the mixed types of groundbait to attract different types of fish.
Usually the groundbait is prepared of mashed salted sardines and scrubed bread or flour.
If you are fishing at the bottom, it is good to add a little sand in the mixture.
If you are fishing in the depths, groundbait must be firmer so it doesnt decay to the bottom.
It is good for fishing on the bottom to put groundbait in the part of women's nylon stockings.
Excellent groundbait is the sea urchin, but it gets very quickly cleansed by little fish. Such groundbait is
very good for night fishing. It is even better to smash sea urchin and mussels, and from that make the groundbait.
If you are fishing on the surface or near the surface groundbait has to be less dense
and has to be shed into the sea more often in order to maintain fish in the fishing zone.
For fishing on flathead mullet, groundbait is old crumbled bread, and bait is fresh bread.
Today you can buy ready groundbait for different types of fishing.
