FISHING ON ADRIATIC

A Chinese proverb says: If you want to be happy your whole life, learn how to catch fish. Another proverb: Give a man a fish and you fed him on that day. Teach him to hunt fish and you fed him for a lifetime.
Fishing is a very old human activity. For example, the river Euphrates and Tigris represent the main source of food Mesopotamia more than 5000 years, Indian cities of Mohenjo Daro and Harappa conceal the remains of copper hook, arrows and multiprongs old almost 5000 years, old egiptian view that clearly outlines the fishing rod, line and a net from around 2000 BC, and similar traces in China date from 400 BC.
Roman mosaics and paintings vividly show fish and other sea animals caught and eaten during the Roman Empire, and Aristotle and Pliny describe the production of purple color in the species of marine snails ( Purple dye murex) by what Fenicians ary known.
Today, at the time of cars, big cities, modern technology , fishing is one of the ways to return to nature.
Croatia is a country rich in fishing opportunities, although less and less, due to uncontrolled fishing. For fisherman there are various types of small and large fish that can be cought along the Adriatic coast.
Local population in Croatia has a long fishing tradition, so there is always someone who can give visitors the information and tips on fishing.
Each island far from the coast is good for fishing. Less people on the island, more fish in the sea.
The tradition of fishing on the Adriatic islands and coast runs from ancient times when the fishing was an important source of food. Especially on the island of Vis, Lastovo, Korcula, Hvar, Brač, Žirje, Kornati islands, and many others. On the page about island of Rab you can read about the history of fishing on that island.
Before you go fishing it is necessary to obtain a fishing permit. To get it, it is necessary to present proof of identity (passport, driving license etc.) Licenses are issued in travel agencies and offices in all towns along the coast.
Permits are issued for recreational fishing, spear-gun fishing, tuna fishing etc. Permits can be daily, weekly, monthly and annually. Recreational fishing license allows fishing with no more than three fishing equipment with no more than five hooks. Maximum weight of the catch is 5 kilograms per day and the catch may not be sold.
The whole Adriatic Sea is open for fishing and special limitations exist for waters of national parks (Kornati , Brijuni, Krka, Mljet), and for some smaller sites.
