BADMINTON IN CROATIA
Badminton is the world second most popular sport (right after football).
Badminton is a game with racquet played by two opponents or two pairs.
Badminton is played on rectangular court divided by net.
Point in badminton is won when “ball” falls down in the opponents part of the field,
and point is lost when “ball” falls out of the court.
Badminton “ball” is made of 16 goose feathers inserted in cork head.
Since 1992 badminton is Olympic sport with 5 disciplines: individual men and women, couples of men
and women and mixed couples.
At the professional level badminton requires exceptional strength, speed and precision.
In average match world best badminton players overrun few kilometers (according some data in
the longest matches players run over 5 kilometers). Badminton is also technically very
demanding sport with very sophisticated strikes with racquet.
Badminton is very old game, it was played in old Greece.
In Japan, in 16th century, one form of badminton was played, it was called hanetsuki.
In modern form badminton started in India, where British army get interested in
game called Poona. Badminton was brought to England, where today rules were set.
It was definitely established in 1873 in Badminton House, Gloucestershire, and that is how it got its name.
Dimensions of badminton field are 13,4 x 5,18m for individual game, and 13,4 x 6,1m for couples.
Net is 1,55m high on the ends, and in the middle it is 1.524m high.
Badminton is a sport played exclusively in halls, because of big influence of
wind and air waft on the ball. It is played on the open, but just as a recreation.
World best badminton players are coming from Asian countries – China, Indonesia, South Korea and Malaysia.
In Europe the best players come from Denmark, England and Holland.
Badminton is played through sets, to win the set you need to get 21 point,
and the points are won only on the service. Match is won when 3 sets are won.
Badminton racquet is very light, 91 – 110 grams. The fastest kick in badminton, 332 km/ hour,
was played by Chinese double player Fu Haifeng.
Badminton is popular in Croatia. Championships are played in all categories.
Badminton equipment is racquet and the ball. Depending if it is for professional sport
or for recreation badminton racquet can cost between 25 – 250 EUR.
